Losing Weight
Aug 19th
One of the reasons I started this blog is that I want people to realize that food can taste really delicious and be good for you. The biggest epidemic in the US right now is obesity. It is the main reason there are so many people with debilitating degenerative diseases, too. Diabetes is aggravated by diet and obesity; heart disease; cancer; skin disorders, etc.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, though. There are ways to take your life back. To lose the excess weight; get off most if not all prescription drugs; have lots of energy; reverse disease More >
The New Food Plate

The new food plate
I was trying to find information on the food groups that I grew up with as a kid, but I couldn’t seem to find anything truly definitive. I know that meat and dairy were the most important categories, but after that I’m not sure. I just know that fruits, veggies, and grains were not as important as they are today and that vegetarian options for protein were unheard of.
So, now we have the new plate. I’m not sure it is any better than the pyramid, although it does show you the proportions more readily. I mean how More >
Foods For Your Thyroid
Aug 5th
When their thyroid isn’t functioning properly most people turn to prescription drugs to help them out. Of course, I’m not a doctor, so I’m not diagnosing or prescribing, but if you have a slight problem you might want to try changing your diet, or at least supplementing your prescription with a diet that will help your thyroid function properly.
When I started into menopause I suddenly started having all kinds of strange symptoms: tiredness; lack of energy: voracious appetite; weight gain; and the worst of all no memory at all. In doing some research I found out that many women suffer More >
Melon Delights
Jun 23rd
As summer is now upon us, so are the wonderful summer fruits. With fourth of July right around the corner the growers are gearing up for major sales of watermelons and cantaloupes. Specials will begin to show up this coming week and continue until shortly after the holiday.
I love watermelon and cantaloupe. I have a fail-safe way of picking a good cantaloupe, but watermelons are still tricky. With cantaloupe all you do is smell the stem-end and gently push on the blossom-end. If the stem end smells like a nice ripe cantaloupe and the blossom end gives just a little More >
The Six Essential Tastes
Jun 21st
According to the ancient science of Ayurveda there are six tastes we should include in each meal. They are: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Have you ever cooked a meal to meet this criteria? Not many people outside the ayurvedic community have, however, including all these tastes in your meal can lead to some surprises.
First, I need to quantify what I just said, because each person needs all six tastes, but not equally. Even within a family different people will do better with different levels of each of the six. However, starting out with at least a little More >
Why Don’t Kids Eat Fruits & Vegetables?
Jun 17th
I was reading an article the other day entitled “Ten ways to get kids to eat their veggies.” My first thought was, “Why aren’t kids eating fruits and vegetables?” As kid I remember there were veggies that weren’t my favorite, but I loved green beans, carrots, salad, and would eat cauliflower and broccoli if they had cheese on them. Fruits were never a problem. I loved them all. As a matter of fact the only fruit I can think of that I’m not particularly fond of is papaya. Fruit is like candy, only good for you.
When I read that people can’t More >
What Is The Right Diet For You?
Jun 9th
Ever since I was a kid there have been “miracle” diets come along, that were supposed to help everyone who was overweight reach their ideal, and with a svelte body to boot. If these fad diets really worked there wouldn’t be an overweight person in the world. So, what’s the truth behind these fad diets.
First off, most of these diets are not something you could live on for the rest of your life. They are something you do for one to two months, lose a lot of weight (which is mostly water), and then go back to eating the way More >
My Favorite Breakfast Drink
Jun 3rd
One thing I found was that just water alone was not a good liquid. It made fruits taste bland and washed out. I found that if I replaced half the water with a 100% fruit juice, suddenly the drink came to life. I thought I had purchased white grape juice, but I managed to grab tangerine-orange drink instead. It seemed I’d made a major mistake, but it was one of those light bulb moments. It made delicious drinks. Here’s my favorite drink using the tangerine-orange drink as a base.
Tropical Breakfast Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup tangerine-orange juice (100% juice no sugar added)
- Juice of More >
Fasting Gourmet Style
May 31st
Just one more day and the 16-day liquid diet fast will come to an end. It has been an experience, that’s for sure. I feel better and lost the extra 5 lbs I was carrying around.
Why am I talking about a fast in a gourmet blog? Because the word healthy is in there, too. In today’s world we overtax our digestive system on a regular basis, by eating too much, too often. Much of the food we eat is not the best quality for our bodies, either, it just tastes good. Giving your digestive tract a rest now and then More >
Fixing My Own No-Mayo Potato Salad
May 9th
Guest post written by Jake Hasselback
I went to this new restaurant in town a few weeks ago that has healthier food offerings. I was a little skeptical about it, but I decided to give it a try because if worse comes to worst I could just never go back if it was bad. When I was there I ordered a sandwich and picked this no mayo potato salad as my side. I had never tried potato salad made without mayo, but I love the normal dish so I thought that I would give it a try. Now I’m not going More >
