Superfoods, Fact Or Fiction?
Feb 10th
Nopal Cactus also called Prickly Pear
There’s a lot of hype these days about superfoods. So many companies are claiming that their product is helpful in healing numerous ailments. How do we know which are true and which aren’t?
The best thing to do is look at scientific evidence. If the company doesn’t have any, then I would say their product is very suspect, especially with all the products out there with scientific support.
Take for instance Betalains. They’ve been scientifically proven to help the body reduce inflammation, which is one of the major causes of pain. Nopalea, a drink made from the More >
More On Living It
Feb 7th
One thing I’ve discovered through years of working as an alternative health practitioner, it is easier to change a person’s religion than their diet. You may find that an amazing statement, especially if you’re a very religious person, but I’ve found this to be true.
Every gathering we have is centered on food. Most of the food has tradition behind it. Do you always have turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, candied sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving dinner? How would you feel if you have rice and beans with a slice of homemade bread with butter on it? Would you More >
Living It Rather Than Studying It
Feb 2nd
When living a healthy lifestyle I’ve noticed that it is one thing to study it, another to actually live it. Living a truly healthy lifestyle is not easy. You find that you cannot make food the center of your celebrations, you cannot dine out as easily as before, you need to prepare some dishes you used to buy in boxes from scratch, etc.
If you look at people who are in the health profession, many of them are very unhealthy. They have studied health, but they have not lived it. A very wise person once said to me that you have More >
A New Healthy Lifestyle
Jan 3rd
A good healthy diet is just one of the keys to permanent weight loss and better overall health.
Every year tens of thousands of people resolve to lose weight, but do they? Not many lose anything significant and keep it off. I saw a poll on CNN this morning asking people if they planned to lose weight in 2012. Wow, I just went back to check the figure and it is already down, however, it was either 73 or 76% of people replied in the affirmative. That means that approximately 75% of the public should lose weight this year. But will More >
Keeping Kids Healthy
Oct 7th
Very dear to my heart is helping kids to stay healthy and vibrant. Today over 30% of children are considered obese, what a tragedy. Obese children usually make obese adults, and obese adults leave themselves open for many more diseases than adults within their normal range of health.
One thing we need to remember is that kid’s taste is different than adults. Finding recipes for kids that they really like is an important key to the success of a healthy diet. If the kids don’t like the food, they won’t eat it. They’ll trade with their friends for food less desirable, but More >
Losing Weight
Aug 19th
One of the reasons I started this blog is that I want people to realize that food can taste really delicious and be good for you. The biggest epidemic in the US right now is obesity. It is the main reason there are so many people with debilitating degenerative diseases, too. Diabetes is aggravated by diet and obesity; heart disease; cancer; skin disorders, etc.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, though. There are ways to take your life back. To lose the excess weight; get off most if not all prescription drugs; have lots of energy; reverse disease More >
The Six Essential Tastes
Jun 21st
According to the ancient science of Ayurveda there are six tastes we should include in each meal. They are: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Have you ever cooked a meal to meet this criteria? Not many people outside the ayurvedic community have, however, including all these tastes in your meal can lead to some surprises.
First, I need to quantify what I just said, because each person needs all six tastes, but not equally. Even within a family different people will do better with different levels of each of the six. However, starting out with at least a little More >
Why Don’t Kids Eat Fruits & Vegetables?
Jun 17th
I was reading an article the other day entitled “Ten ways to get kids to eat their veggies.” My first thought was, “Why aren’t kids eating fruits and vegetables?” As kid I remember there were veggies that weren’t my favorite, but I loved green beans, carrots, salad, and would eat cauliflower and broccoli if they had cheese on them. Fruits were never a problem. I loved them all. As a matter of fact the only fruit I can think of that I’m not particularly fond of is papaya. Fruit is like candy, only good for you.
When I read that people can’t More >
What Is The Right Diet For You?
Jun 9th
Ever since I was a kid there have been “miracle” diets come along, that were supposed to help everyone who was overweight reach their ideal, and with a svelte body to boot. If these fad diets really worked there wouldn’t be an overweight person in the world. So, what’s the truth behind these fad diets.
First off, most of these diets are not something you could live on for the rest of your life. They are something you do for one to two months, lose a lot of weight (which is mostly water), and then go back to eating the way More >
Fasting Gourmet Style
May 31st
Just one more day and the 16-day liquid diet fast will come to an end. It has been an experience, that’s for sure. I feel better and lost the extra 5 lbs I was carrying around.
Why am I talking about a fast in a gourmet blog? Because the word healthy is in there, too. In today’s world we overtax our digestive system on a regular basis, by eating too much, too often. Much of the food we eat is not the best quality for our bodies, either, it just tastes good. Giving your digestive tract a rest now and then More >
