Celebrations
Barbecue Tofu Over Brown Rice
Apr 26th
Tonight I’m having a celebration for the people who have been a part of my healthy lifstyle pilot program. All four of them made it to the end, with varying degrees of “success.” So, we’ll do a final weigh in and take measurements and then just have a nice healthy potluck together.
I’m fixing one of my favorites tonight Barbecue Tofu Over Brown Rice. I only have approximate measurements, so I’ve listed them in the order of the amount I put in. What I did was to look at a regular barbecue sauce and see what the ingredients were. More >
Entertaining With Some Cupcakes
Apr 3rd
The office would love these!
Guest post written by April Gibbs
I’ve never been turned away at a party for bringing cupcakes along. See, I’m really into baking cupcakes and I come up with all kinds of awesome varieties for baking them. I’m always looking for the next big great recipe too!
I’m not quite sure what got me on my cupcake baking kick a few years back, but I’m glad that I did because I’ve never looked back and my coworkers love it when I bring them with me to work. One thing I want though is an apron to wear while More >
Cheesecake Without The Eggs
Mar 1st
Don't these look decadently delicious?
One dessert I have missed since I became a vegetarian is cheesecake. I’ve tried several vegetarian and vegan recipes, but they’ve never quite matched the creamy smoothness and delicious taste of the original.
Always hopeful of rekindling my “love” relationship with this delightful dessert, I took a look at Cheesecake.com and was pleasantly surprised to find they include recipes, as well as online order cakes, on their site. They had quite a number of recipes for me to try. Some use whipped topping in place of the eggs, which I thought was a novel idea. The one that More >
What Turns Your True Love On?
Feb 14th
Today is Valentine’s Day, a day filled with cards, flowers, chocolate and usually a nice dinner out. Most of the time we think of a candlelight dinner, complete with romantic music, and a very expensive meal.
The most important thing about an intimate meal is that it is what both parties really want. For me the ultra expensive meals always made me uncomfortable. I could prepare much better tasting food at home for less than half of one plate. So, even though we were supposed to be out for a romantic evening all I could see were dollar signs. So much More >
Holiday Blessings
Dec 23rd
Let's look at our common desires like love, peace, sustainability, health, prosperity for all.
We’re just a couple days away from celebrating Christmas. It is amazing to me to realize that almost every tradition on the planet has a special holiday during these bleak winter months. The exact days and traditions vary, but the same ideas are behind all of them, at least as far as I can tell.
It is a time to celebrate the return of the light. We go through the shortest day in the year. In some traditions this also means the renewing of your own internal light. More >
Gift Ideas For Your Health Nut Friends
Dec 9th
The holidays are rapidly approaching. If you’ve got health nuts on your list for the holidays, buying gifts for them may be a mystery. I know when people hear our dietary restrictions (all voluntary) they secretly vow never to invite us over for a meal. However, with just a little bit of planning you can give a gift, even an edible gift, to a friend that is choosing to eat consciously.
You'll make a health-nut's eyes glow when they receive goji berries as a gift.
First off there are some ingredients that we love that are pretty expensive (of course all of More >
Keeping It Healthy Through The Holidays
Dec 6th
Healthy foods are easier to find at parties these days.
During the holidays it’s a great temptations to fall off the bandwagon and try to make it up in the new year. However, with just a little bit of planning you can enjoy your holiday feasting without dismay when you step on the scale on January 1st.
- Eat a little something about 20 minutes before you’re scheduled to arrive at the party. It takes 20 minutes for our stomach to signal our brain that we’ve eaten. This will trick your brain into thinking you’ve eaten a meal and you won’t be as hungry.
- Don’t More >
How To Test Yeast
Dec 2nd
Mmmm, I can smell them already.
With the holidays just around the corner, many families have a tradition of a special homemade bread for holiday morning breakfast, like cinnamon rolls or stollen. Nothing casts a shadow over the day more quickly than preparing the dough for homemade cinnamon rolls and then uncovering it after it’s had time to rise, only to find a hard, flat lump in the bottom.
Here’s a very quick way to test yeast, that’s been setting around for some time, to see if it’s still viable.
- Place ¼ cup of warm water in a small bowl.
- Add 1 tsp sugar More >
Keeping The Holidays Healthy and Raw
Nov 29th
Changing traditional holiday foods can be hard. Start some new ones with healthy raw treats.
Christmas is a time when we think of family get-togethers, memories and traditional treats and meals. With many of the traditional ingredients: white sugar and flour, dairy products, trans and saturated fats, and refined carbs, on the “no-no” list you may be wondering what you’ll eat this holiday season. We don’t want our families to feel deprived of the traditional treats they’ve come to associate with the holidays, yet we want to provide healthier choices.
You might want to try some raw food desserts and see how More >
More Vegetarian Holiday Ideas
Nov 22nd
You can make pumpkin pie from scratch. Just buy a pumpkin grown especially for that. They are usually small and sweeter than regular pumpkins.
Maybe this is your first holiday as a vegetarian, or your college age child just announced they’ve gone vegetarian. Maybe you’ll be having some vegetarian guests, or you just want to eat less meat yourself. Whatever the reason, having several options for a holiday meal is a good idea.
For main dishes there’s the mock turkey recipe from my last post, but you can also have winter squash. I remember attending my first vegetarian Thanksgiving. The people had More >
